Activity = longevity
Exercise has long been proven to be a key to longevity. Now a batch of new research suggests the fountain of youth may lie in a combination of physical, social, and productivity activity.
A recent Swedish study of 4,232 people found that non-exercise physical activity, such as yard work or fishing; reduce death risk by 30 percent among the elderly.
Meanwhile, researchers from Harvard, Yale, and the Rush Institute for Health Aging who followed 2,700 men and women Ages 65and older for 13 years reported that the most physically active participants lived longest when they added social and productive activity. Participants who were more socially active lived longer compared with those who were less socially involved.
And a 2016 study noted that socially isolation during old age was more harmful to health than diabetes when it comes to developing or controlling hypertension.
The finings suggest social and productive activities may affect lifespan because they promote a sense of self-efficacy create a sense of purpose in life, and enhance social support.
